Game Recap (Aug 30, 2024)

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The San Diego Padres matched a season-high in runs as they rocked the Tampa Bay Rays 13-5 Tuesday night at Petco Park behind a gem from Joe Musgrove.

The win gives the Padres (72-53) a three-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Wild Card race. The Rays (63-62) dropped their fourth straight and are now 5 1/2 games back of the Padres for the final Wild Card berth.

Jurickson Profar led the Padres' 14-hit attack with a 3-for-4 night that included two doubles and two RBI. Juan Soto went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two RBI, while Manny Machado was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

Musgrove (10-4) allowed just two runs on five hits and a walk in six innings of work. He struck out seven batters and lowered his ERA to 2.86.

The Padres jumped out to an early lead when they scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Profar doubled home Soto and Machado with two outs to give the Padres a 2-0 lead. Jake Cronenworth then singled home Profar to make it 3-0.

The Rays got on the board in the top of the second when Yandy Diaz singled home Isaac Paredes to make it 3-1. However, the Padres got that run right back in the bottom of the inning when Ha-seong Kim singled home Soto to make it 4-1.

The Padres added two more runs in the third inning on an RBI single by Profar and a sacrifice fly by Machado to make it 6-1.

The Rays cut the lead to 6-2 in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Paredes, but the Padres got that run back in the bottom of the inning on a solo homer by Soto to make it 7-2.

The Padres put the game away with a five-run fifth inning. Machado doubled home Kim and Nomar Mazara, and Soto singled home Machado to make it 10-2. Cronenworth then singled home Soto and Profar to make it 12-2.

The Rays added three runs in the top of the ninth inning on a two-run homer by Diaz and an RBI single by Paredes, but it was too little, too late as the Padres held on for the 13-5 victory.
