Elaine Thompson-Herah defends title

Jamaica sweeps the podium

Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica defended her Olympic 100m title in Tokyo, winning the gold medal in a time of 10.61 seconds. She was followed by her fellow Jamaicans Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson, who won silver and bronze, respectively. This was the first time that Jamaica had swept the podium in the women's 100m at the Olympics.

Thompson-Herah's victory was particularly impressive as she had been battling a hamstring injury in the lead-up to the Games. She also became the first woman to win back-to-back Olympic 100m titles since Florence Griffith Joyner in 1988.

Fraser-Pryce, who is a two-time Olympic 100m champion herself, was gracious in defeat. She said that she was proud of Thompson-Herah and that she was happy to see Jamaica sweep the podium.

Jackson's bronze medal was a major upset. She was not considered to be a medal contender coming into the Games, but she ran a personal best time of 10.76 seconds to finish third.

The women's 100m final was one of the most exciting races of the Tokyo Olympics. It was a testament to the depth of talent in the women's sprinting field.
