Tropical Depression: Understanding the Classification
What is a Tropical Depression?
A tropical depression is a low-pressure system that forms over warm ocean waters. It has organized convection, or thunderstorms, but its maximum sustained wind speeds are less than 39 miles per hour (63 kilometers per hour).
Classification of Tropical Cyclones
Tropical cyclones are classified according to their strength using the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Tropical depressions are the weakest type of tropical cyclone, followed by tropical storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes.
