Protecting Residents from Mosquito-Borne Virus
Understanding Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)
Eastern Equine Encephalitis is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause severe illness and even death in humans.
It is most commonly spread during the summer months, when mosquitoes are most active.
Symptoms include high fever, stiff neck, headache, confusion, and seizures.
Oxford Responds to EEE Threat
The Oxford Board of Health has approved an outdoor curfew from 6 PM to 6 AM to protect residents from EEE.
This curfew is in effect from August 25 to September 12, 2023.
During the curfew hours, residents are advised to stay indoors as much as possible.
EEE Risk Level and Precautionary Measures
The risk level for EEE in Oxford and surrounding areas has been raised to high.
In addition to the curfew, residents are also advised to take the following precautions:
- Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
- Wear long sleeves and pants when outdoors.
- Eliminate standing water around your property, where mosquitoes can breed.
