France defender Theo Hernandez struck the winning penalty in a 5-3 shootout win against Portugal to reach the semi-finals of Euro 2024..
Both teams struggled to manufacture offense in the first half as Portugal got off just three shots with none coming on target, while France had four shots with one on target. Portugal picked up the pace in the second half and had a great chance to take the lead in the 65th minute, but Joao Felix fired wide from close range.
France had a golden opportunity to win the game in stoppage time, but Kylian Mbappe's shot was saved by Rui Patricio. The game went to penalties, and Hernandez scored the winning penalty to send France through to the semi-finals.
Portugal will be disappointed to be knocked out of the tournament, but they can be proud of their performance. They played well against a strong French team and were unlucky to lose on penalties.
France will now face either England or Spain in the semi-finals. They will be confident of reaching the final, but they will need to be at their best to beat either of those teams.
